"We Are the Drum"
The Legacy of African Americans
Created & Staged by
Cluster C Teachers
& Zelda Dashiell Johnson
in honor of
Black History Month

(above) Students listen to last minute instructions from Ms. Myers-Turner and Ms. Cox before the curtain goes up.

(right) Drummers practice their opening song and ask questions.

The curtain opens and parents get their first glimpse of the production "We Are the Drum". Students are wearing African head dresses and some students are dressed like well know African Americans (Harriet Tubman, George Washington Carver, Jackie Robinson, Barbara Jordan, and Martin Luther King.

The music starts and dancers come out from the sides of the stage in two rows. First and second grade students created the mural based on Romare Bearden's paint and paper collage entitled, "The Piano Lesson".

The drums play while students chant and continue to dance on the stage. The production was multi-media including music, dancing, art works, and biographical sketches.

Throughout the production students came up to the microphone and gave information about different well known African Americans.

We would like to thank all the parents and family members that came to the "We Are the Drum" production.

For their invaluable assistance Cluster C Teachers & Students gratefully acknowledge: Ernest Biggers, Brenda Bricker, Lowry Browning, Steffy Clingan, Robyn Harrison, Holly Holt, Jeana Krause, Patty Martin, and Ashley Myers-Turner. Thank You!!!
