In August of 1994, The Rice School / La Escuela Rice was opened as a partnership effort between the Houston Independent School District and Rice University. In addition to our emphasis on technology, The Rice School / La Escuela Rice opened with the belief that every child needs and deserves at least two languages to function in a global society. Our program of technology literacy and language acquisition is unique in a K-8 setting.
Technology learning goals are one of the primary functions of The Rice School / La Escuela Rice Magnet program. Due to generous gifts from Compaq Computer Corporation in 1994 and 1996, the school offers a technology-rich environment.

Spanish fluency is a goal for all students at The Rice School / La Escuela Rice. Spanish is introduced to lower grades as an ancillary class once a week. In Middle school, this learning continues with Spanish as a required class daily. Cultural awareness is increased through the use of the Internet, e-mail pen pals, and cultural studies that promote knowledge and appreciation of diversity.
