A meteorologist is a person who studies the weather. Meteorologists use many different kinds of instruments to collect data before they can predict the weather. The accuracy of measuring instruments has not changed greatly, but the ability to analyze large amounts of information (data) has allowed for more accurate weather forecasts. Look below to learn about a few of the instruments used by meteorologists.

Anemometer
Measures wind speed in mph. The cups catch the wind, turning a dial attached to the instrument. The dial shows the wind speed.
Barometer
Measures air pressure in millibars. An Italian scientist named Torricelli built the first barometer in 1643.
Thermometer
Measures air temperature. Thermometers work because matter expands when heated. When air around the thermometer heats the liquid, the liquid expands and moves up the tube.
Wind Vane or Wind Sock
Measures wind direction by pointing towards North, East, South, West or a combination ex. Northwest.
Weather Balloon/Radiosonde
Measures weather conditions higher in the atmosphere.
Rain Gauge
Measures the amount of rainfall in mm. Not only does a rain gauge measure rainfall, but also all other forms of precipitation.
